India Expands Missile Exports with Vietnam Defense Deal

(MENAFN) India has finalized an agreement to provide Vietnam with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, according to Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. He also indicated that negotiations for a similar sale to Indonesia are nearing completion.

Speaking during a regional security forum in Singapore over the weekend, Singh said discussions with both Southeast Asian nations had advanced significantly, noting that the Vietnamese agreement had already been concluded.

“My understanding is that with both Indonesia and with Vietnam, the deal is in the final stages… in fact, for Vietnam, I understand that it has already been signed, probably not publicly announced, but it’s already been signed,” Singh said.

The development follows an official visit to India by Vietnamese President To Lam earlier last month, reflecting growing defense cooperation between the two countries.

With the acquisition, Vietnam becomes the second country in Southeast Asia to deploy the BrahMos missile system. The Philippines was the first nation in the region to purchase the weapon, receiving its initial shipment in April of last year under a $375 million contract signed in 2023.

The BrahMos missile takes its name from India’s Brahmaputra River and Russia’s Moskva River. It is regarded as one of the fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles in the world and was developed through a joint venture between India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the company behind the Oniks anti-ship missile.

Initially limited to a range of approximately 180 miles, the system has since undergone upgrades that extended its reach, enhancing its military value and increasing interest among countries seeking to strengthen their defense capabilities amid changing regional security conditions.

Designed for multi-platform deployment, the missile can be launched from naval vessels, submarines, aircraft, and ground-based launch systems. It was first publicly showcased at the MAKS-2001 aerospace exhibition in Moscow.

According to reports, BrahMos Aerospace, supported by both the Indian and Russian governments, is also engaged in advanced negotiations with Indonesia over a potential missile sale valued between $200 million and $350 million. If finalized, the agreement would further expand the missile’s presence in Southeast Asia and reinforce India’s growing role in the international defense market.
